Big and vibrant, the Beyond Broadway Experience’s summer school production of Legally Blonde the Musical, at the King’s to Saturday, is a glorious mix of huge ensemble numbers and strong solo performances.
Amélie The Musical
★★★★☆ Half-step Toodeloo:
Peppered with emotion and fizzing with energy, the touring production of Amélie the Musical – at the King’s to Saturday – is the sort of treat which gives musical theatre a good name.
Captain Corelli’s Mandolin
★★★★☆ Intense:
The heart and soul of Louis de Bernières’ 1994 novel, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, is caught with sometimes burning intensity in this stage version, at the Edinburgh King’s until Saturday.
Avenue Q
★★★★☆ City slickest:
What if Sesame Street got real? If the lessons it taught weren’t aimed at kids, but young adults? What if decidedly Muppety creatures…. swore? Avenue Q at the King’s Theatre has the answers.
Lost At Sea
★★★★☆ Poignant:
Perth Theatre’s production of Lost At Sea, at the King’s until Wednesday, is emotional, humane and beautifully staged.
The Comedy About A Bank Robbery
★★★☆☆ Spectacular:
There are plenty of laughs to be had in the touring Comedy About A Bank Robbery at the King’s. There are also a couple of gasp-inducing coups de theatre.
The Worst Witch
★★★★☆ Magical:
The joy and energy that low-budget children’s theatre often possesses can sometimes be dissipated when a comparatively large budget comes in, with a corresponding desire to please larger audiences. This is emphatically not the case with the touring production of The Worst Witch, which is high-octane, clever and extremely enjoyable.
The Verdict
★★★★☆ Engrossing:
It’s no trial watching this stage version of the classic film The Verdict at the King’s. In fact, it’s a real pleasure seeing washed-up Boston lawyer Frank Galvin get his mojo back as he takes on a case of alleged medical malpractice.
