Playhouse
Crazy for You
★★★☆☆ Song and dance:
Big tap dance routines and even bigger set pieces dominate the Watermill Theatre’s touring production of Crazy for You at the Playhouse until Saturday, but at the expense of the chemistry in the big romances of the show.
Justin’s Band
★★★☆☆ Tumbled:
Love him or loathe him there is no mistaking Justin Fletcher. As one of the BBC’s top children’s TV presenters Fletcher – aka Mr Tumble – is one of the most recognisable faces in the land.
Hairspray
★★★★☆ Colourful
It’s time to grab a giant can of Hairspray and get your big hair ready to be transported back to the swinging 60s as the smash hit musical returns to the Playhouse in Edinburgh this week.
The Sound of Music
★★★★☆ Timeless classic:
It may be a cliché, but Edinburgh is definitely “alive with the Sound of Music” once again as the classic musical returns to the Playhouse.
Shrek The Musical
★★★☆☆ Breezy:
Big, bright and brash, there are plenty of laughs in the new touring production of Shrek the Musical, which is debuting at the Playhouse until the first week of the new year.
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
★★★★★ Oh Carole:
Beautiful, the musical life story of a pop legend Carole King makes for perfect entertainment at the Playhouse all week until Saturday.
Tango Moderno
★★★★☆ Someone’s been tangoed:
There’s a hitch at Tango Moderno, the latest Playhouse dance extravaganza which is playing to Saturday – but there are no missteps.
Cabaret
★★★★☆ Chilling:
Chilling in all the right places, the revival of the award-winning tour of Cabaret starring Will Young as the Emcee feels as important a piece of musical theatre as it ever did.
Sunset Boulevard
★★★★★ Triumphant:
There is no doubt that Ria Jones, as Norma Desmond, owns the Curve theatre’s production of Sunset Boulevard that lights into the Playhouse this week, on the first date of its major UK tour.
Cilla The Musical
★★★★☆ Mersey hard to beat:
Step inside the Playhouse, love, and see the triumphs and tragedies on the way to Cilla Black becoming an entertainment legend.
