Playhouse
Disney’s Aladdin
★★★★☆ Spectacular
Flying onto the Playhouse stage on the magic carpet of Disney, the big touring production of Aladdin which sets off on a 15 month UK tour is a big, sparkling concoction of fun.
The King and I
★★★★☆ Spectacular
Bartlett Sher’s opulent production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic The King and I calls at the Edinburgh Playhouse this week as part of its on-going UK tour.
Greatest Days
★★★★☆ I found heaven
It’s time to Take That & Party as Greatest Days reopens Edinburgh Playhouse this week after its extended summer break for a spot of external refurbishment.
Strictly Ballroom: The Musical
★★★★☆ Ballroom bliss
Strictly Come Dancing comes full circle at the Edinburgh Playhouse this week as ‘Kevin from Grimsby’ stars in Strictly Ballroom: The Musical.
The Mousetrap
★★★☆☆ Dependably twisting
It’s a case of new decade – same old dependability for this touring version of the long-running West End production of The Mousetrap, which has a slightly larger feel to it than when it last celebrated a decade in town.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – The Musical
★★★☆☆ Visually impressive
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – The Musical is an impressive exhibition of theatrical skill that will satisfy fans of the story.
Annie
★★★☆☆ Cheerful
A relentlessly upbeat feel to the touring revival of the West End production of Annie, at the Playhouse to Saturday, is the source of considerable charm.
Rocky Horror Show
★★★★☆ Anything but rocky
There’s a light, over at Greenside Place as The Rocky Horror Show returns to the Playhouse with its 50th anniversary show, says Martin Gray.
Jersey Boys
★★★★☆ Slick and seamless
Packed with hits and bristling with energy, Jersey Boys, the musical telling of the formation and career of the Four Season, returns to the Playhouse for another extended stay until February 4.
Burns
★★☆☆☆ Messy
That a world premiere should take place at the Playhouse is not the oddest thing about the long, over 30-year gestation of Burns – and, sadly, not the most inexplicable thing about the end result.
