Traverse
Dancing Shoes
★★★★☆ Moving
Dancing Shoes, written by Stephen Christopher and Graeme Smith, is a joyful and hilarious exploration of addiction, attention, male friendship, and the love of movement.
Òran
★★★★☆ Inventive
Ancient and modern collide in Òran, a technically formidable and well-performed touring production at the Traverse for three days only.
Arlington
★★★★☆ Powerful
There is a rare intensity to Arlington, at the Traverse until Saturday, a new production by Glasgow-based dance/theatre company Shotput of Enda Walsh’s 2016 play, which features a young woman trapped in a room in a state-controlled tower block.
PPP: Righ Iasgair: The Fisher King
★★★☆☆ Jarring
Righ Iasgair: The Fisher King by Kenny Boyle, the last in the current series of the Traverse’s presentations of Òran Mór’s A Play, A Pie & A Pint, is an evocative presentation of Scottish language and culture that fails to carry off a drastic shift in tone.
Batshit
★★★★★ Visually haunting
Batshit is a powerful reflection on the treatment of women’s mental health, running at Traverse Theatre until Saturday 25 as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival.
PPP: Maybe Tomorrow
★★★☆☆ Jolly
Maybe Tomorrow, by Brian James O’Sullivan and Hannah Jarrett-Scott from Òran Mór at the Traverse, is one of those mini-musicals that A Play, A Pie & A Pint does so well. If it is all a bit inconsequential, it is highly enjoyable.
Black Hole Sign
★★★★☆ Sadly angry
Black Hole Sign by Uma Nada-Rajah, the Tron/Traverse co-production (in association with the NTS) gives every appearance of being a big deal, including appearing in Traverse One for more than a week. And – despite some real problems – it lives up to its billing.
PPP: Cheapo
★★★☆☆ Promising
Cheapo by Katy Nixon impresses in the way it deals with serious issues. It is well acted and full of life but has something of an unfinished feel.
Man’s Best Friend
★★★★☆ Beautifully performed
Man’s Best Friend by Douglas Maxwell is a Tron Theatre production ending its tour at the Traverse for three performances, and should certainly be caught while you still have the chance.
