The Sleeping Beauty
★★★★☆ Great entertainment
The Sleeping Beauty, from Edinburgh People’s Theatre at the Church Hill, is everything you could want from a traditional pantomime.
baba
★★☆☆☆ Unfulfilled
The Edinburgh Graduate Theatre Group brings a new festive folktale to the Pleasance stage this weekend in the form of baba, a new take on the old tales of Baba Yaga and her house on chicken legs. This piece has many ambitions, but falls short of achieving them in its writing and execution.
SiX – Teen Edition
★★★★☆ Sterling stuff
The young queens of Captivate Theatre put in a terrific shift for SiX – Teen Edition, at the Assembly Roxy through to Sunday. And on the way remind us, as if we needed reminding, just how good a piece SiX really is.
Capture the Flag!
★★★☆☆ Good fun
Capture the Flag! follows a group of fast-food workers on a mandatory company retreat where tensions build and relationships are tested. The Napier Drama Society’s Winter Show at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, is a light-hearted satire filled with workplace drama and absurdity.
Going Postal
★★★★☆ First Class
Strawmoddie’s Going Postal, their fourth production of a Terry Pratchett novel adapted for the stage by Stephen Briggs, is delivered with all due care and attention to detail at the Pleasance Theatre to Sunday.
Aladdin
★★★☆☆ Olde gold
There’s some vintage panto magic happening at Inverleith St Serf’s Church Centre this week, as St Serf’s Players stage Aladdin written by Norman Robbins and directed by Jack Paterson.
Little Red Robin Hood
★★★☆☆ Clever
Little Red Robin Hood from Happy Sad Productions is a clever mash-up of Little Red Riding Hood, Robin Hood, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears, with elements of other pantos thrown in for good measure.
Dancing at Lughnasa
★★★☆☆ Affecting
Even as other companies gear up for Christmas, Leitheatre look back to September with Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa at the Church Hill. This entirely unseasonal downbeat piece is discharged with great care and some impressive acting.
