Assembly Roxy
Arcana
★★★★☆ Fine artistry
Arcana, at Assembly Roxy, is a beautiful musical about empire, revolution, and finding ones own voice; despite its Edinburgh-based team, the roots of this production reach beyond Scottish soil and into times and places far and wide.
Prophets
★★★★★ Claustrophobic Horror
Prophets is a claustrophobic and intense hour at the RoxyBoxy. Kerris, a Scottish researcher, arrives at a remote British Overseas Territory, ostensibly to study oxygen levels in coral. As she gradually befriends one of the locals, things start to unravel. Who is the Prophet? What does he want? Why has she really come to the island?
BearGirl
★★★★☆ Star Quality
A woman in a bear suit. She’s not wearing if for you, it’s not comfortable and she doesn’t like it. Rachel De Fontes’s titular BearGirl deals with the oddness of the situation in short order from the start of this significant and engaging piece of new writing by Emery Schaffer at the Boxy Roxy.
The Effect
★★★★☆ Compellingly performed
The Effect by Northern Assignment, upstairs at Assembly Roxy as part of a series of one-nighters in Edinburgh and Glasgow, is an intelligent production, staged with care and performed with distinction.
PPP: The Hen Night
★★★★☆ Excellent ensemble
The Hen Night by Debbie Hannan, the last in the current season of A Play, Pie and a Pint from Òran Mór at Assembly Roxy, is a wonderfully performed piece that is great fun as well as deceptively serious.
PPP: The Corinthian
★★★★☆ Necessary
The Corinthian by Joe McCann, the latest Play, Pie and a Pint from Òran Mór at Assembly Roxy, is an engrossing, splendidly performed and utterly timely piece of theatre.
Gretel (EICF)
★★★☆☆ Twisty
In Gretel, at Assembly Roxy as part of the Edinburgh International Children’s Festival, Italian contemporary circus company Quattrox4 take their audience on a journey to discover the meaning of “home”.
PPP: Funeral For My Boobs
★★★☆☆ Lively
Funeral For My Boobs by Hannah Howie, the latest Play, Pie and a Pint from Òran Mór at Assembly Roxy, is a touching autobiographical tale presented as an all-singing, all-dancing spectacular.
PPP: Off The Rails
★★★★☆ Hugely promising
Off The Rails is an auspicious start for the first season at the Assembly Roxy of Òran Mór’s legendary A Play, a Pie and a Pint. The extremely impressive mini-musical is the professional writing debut of Stephanie MacGaraidh, who has also written the songs and is the play’s sole performer.
Reasons to Be Pretty
★★★☆☆ Irregular
Reasons to Be Pretty, by local grassroots company Locked in Thought at the Roxy until Saturday, brings fine acting to Neil LaBute’s complex interrogation of social expectations and interpersonal trust.
