Assembly Roxy
Carmen
★★★★★ Sharp as a dagger
Assembly Roxy: Tues 23 – Sat 27 February 2016
Review by Catriona Graham:
For their first production in the Assembly Roxy, Edinburgh Studio Opera set Bizet’s opera of love, lust and death during the Spanish Civil War.
The Bruce In Ireland
★★★☆☆ Brutal:
Bleak beyond remorse, Ben Blow’s new play about Edward Bruce’s bloody foray into Ireland, playing at the Assembly Roxy until Thursday, makes for cynical viewing.
Beam Theatre Open Audition
Open call for In Love and Warcraft:
Edinburgh’s youngest amateur company, Beam Theatre, is holding open auditions for its next production, In Love and Warcraft, to be staged in February 2016.
The Deliverance
✭✭✭✭✩ Fertile soil:
Involving, dark, human poetry is in great supply in The Deliverance at Assembly Roxy. Stellar Quines’ presentation of the third part of the story that began with The List is a success in its own right, as well as a worthy successor to what has gone before.
The Bookbinder
✭✭✭✭✭ Beautiful craftsmanship:
A book is a beautiful thing, a story is a work of art, a fairytale is a thing of dreams. The Bookbinder is all of these – it’s a beautiful, articulate and inventive show that is as engaging as it is mysterious.
Titus Andronicus
✭✭✭✩✩ There will be blood:
Bloody, nasty and noisy, the Grads’s production of Titus Andronicus at the Assembly Roxy has all of the ingredients of a memorable shocker but it is let down by some confused moments and a surprising politeness.
Titus in Iraq
Grads’ Andronicus steps into modern era:
The buzz has predictably focussed on the blood and the guts in the Grads’ new production of Titus Andronicus, which is at the Assembly Roxy to Saturday this week.
Fear and Misery of the Third Reich
✭✭✭✩✩ Bitty but braw:
Brecht gets a comedic turn at the Assembly Roxy this week, as the QMU students of Cobweb Theatre bring a funny and relevant production of Fear and Misery of the Third Reich.
The Merchant of Venice
✭✭✭✩✩ Ambitiously intelligent:
Aiming high, Edinburgh University Shakespeare Company’s production of The Merchant of Venice is accomplished and intelligent. If it does not always live up to its potential, it is not for want of trying.
