Royal Lyceum Theatre
Shock cuts to theatre companies
Mixed results in Creative Scotland’s latest funding round:
Edinburgh’s Catherine Wheels and Lung Ha’s theatre companies have had 100% core funding cuts in a day of mixed fortune for the city’s theatre as Creative Scotland announced its latest funding round.
The Lover
★★★☆☆ Cool:
There is a bittersweet delicacy to The Lover, the Lyceum’s collaboration with Stellar Quines and Scottish Dance Theatre, that cannot quite compensate for a lack of emotional fire.
The Arabian Nights
★★★★☆ Ravishing:
Beautiful to look at and clever enough to know when to be stupid, The Arabian Nights at the Lyceum is genuine family Christmas entertainment.
Lyceum to touch void
Lyceum announces Bristol Old Vic co-pros for 2018:
A new David Greig adaptation of Touching the Void and the return of Wils Wilson at the helm for Twelfth Night will feature in the Lyceum’s 2018/19 season.
What Shadows
★★★☆☆ Puzzling:
There is a delicate romanticism to What Shadows that is at odds with its subject matter. An excellent central performance and high production values cannot ever quite overcome some problematic elements.
Book Festival Round-up
The view from Charlotte Square:
The Book Festival continues to explore the interface between literature and performance in a way that is refreshing and risk-taking. If it does not always come off, that is certainly a price worth paying.
Oresteia: This Restless House
★★★★☆ Drips grandeur:
Huge and elemental forces drive This Restless House, the version of the Oresteia by Zinnie Harris originally produced by the Citizens’ Glasgow and the National Theatre of Scotland last year.
The Outrun
Playing With Books rehearsed reading:
Playing With Books – the series of events devised by the Edinburgh International Book Festival and the Royal Lyceum – got off to an enthralling start with The Outrun.
