Ruth Bennett
Cock
★★★★☆ Potent
Kitty Milk Theatre’s debut, Cock, at the Studio of Augustine United Church for four performances only, is an auspicious start which only narrowly misses perfection.
Reasons to Be Pretty
★★★☆☆ Irregular
Reasons to Be Pretty, by local grassroots company Locked in Thought at the Roxy until Saturday, brings fine acting to Neil LaBute’s complex interrogation of social expectations and interpersonal trust.
Ruddigore: The Witch’s Curse
★★★★★ Electric verve
Ruddigore: The Witch’s Curse, presented by the Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group at the Bedlam Theatre to Saturday, is absurdly good.
The Constant Wife
★★★★☆ Enormously entertaining
The RSC’ production of The Constant Wife, by Laura Wade based on the comedy by W Somerset Maugham at the Festival Theatre until Saturday as part of a UK tour, establishes its tone immediately.
Art
★★★★☆ Thought-provoking
The EUTC’s production of Art, at the Bedlam until Saturday, is compelling. It largely succeeds in navigating the many pitfalls hidden in the ostensibly straightforward, Tony Award-winning script.
The Ladykillers
★★★☆☆ Old school
The Ladykillers, by Edinburgh People’s Theatre (EPT) at the Church Hill Theatre until Saturday, is endearing and capably executed.
The Grand Duke
★★★★☆ Inspired merriment
The Grand Duke, from EdGAS, is a pleasurably silly delight from start to finish. Consistently stylised to the perfect degree of deliberate overacting, it elicits laughs without being overdone.
Kiss Me, Kate
★★★★☆ Chef’s kiss
Kiss Me, Kate, from the Edinburgh University Footlights, is a strikingly ambitious production. Not every element succeeds equally, but some aspects are excellent, and all of it entertains.
FRIENDS! The Musical Parody
★★☆☆☆ Muddled
FRIENDS! The Musical Parody, at the Edinburgh Playhouse through Saturday, is a meta-episode covering the ten-year arc of the iconic 90’s TV show about the lives and loves of six young adults in Manhattan.
