Jacuzzi by Twilight
★★★★☆ Slick
Taking audiences to the streets of Metroville, Jacuzzi by Twilight is a fast-paced comedy, running on alternate (odd) dates with Edinburgh-based Optimiserables other show, Opportunity in Kind.
Ships
★★☆☆☆ Lacking Nuance
Staged in the bar of the Leith Arches events space off Leith Walk, Ships by Mark Forrest for Chapter Three Productions, is set in a very similar Leith bar in the late 1980s.
An Opportunity in Kind
★★★★☆ Tight ensemble
One of two Fringe shows by Edinburgh-based The Optimiserables, An Opportunity in Kind at theSpace on the Mile, manages to strike a remarkably authentic note in spite of its rather absurd narrative.
Our Town Needs A Nando’s
★★★☆☆ Relatably painful
Our Town Needs A Nando’s, from Hot Mess Productions at theSpace on the Mile for the first week of the Fringe, is a relatable and lived-in coming-of-age comedy with dark themes.
Plano
★★★★★ Thrilling microcosm
Plano, presented by Edinburgh Graduate Theatre Group for EdFringe Week One, feels like David Lynch, Tennessee Williams and Luigi Pirandello formed a fractious throuple in some netherworld multiverse. That is meant as high praise, just don’t expect the play to make any Newtonian kind of sense.
We Have a Dream
★★★★☆ Becoming Men
It’s never really about football, is it? As much as We Have a Dream at theSpace @ Symposium Hall explodes with the energy, crumpled flags and lager of a doomed Euros campaign, this is a piece about being a man. Or perhaps more accurately, about becoming a man.
Golden Beryl: Special Oblivion
★★★★☆ Ludicrous
If you haven’t been threatened with assassination at the Pianodrome, have you really been to the Fringe? Leaning heavily on the other in the “Theatre, comedy, other” bracket, The Golden Beryl team invade the Pianodrome at St Oswald’s with Golden Beryl: Special Oblivion.
How to Write a Novel (or Not)
★★★☆☆ A Privilege
The poet Jenny Joseph warns that she will wear purple with a red hat which doesn’t go. Marie-Louise Mills is far too chic for that in her solo show of reminiscences, How to Write a Novel (or Not).
Jane Austen’s Love & Freindship [sic]
★★★☆☆ Droll
Edinburgh Rep Company and Erstwhile Media take on Jane Austen with an adaptation of the legendary novelist’s Love and Freindship [sic], a satirical parody written by Austen at the age of fourteen.
Bucksomely Betrothals
★★★★★ Bucksome Brilliance
Bucksomely Betrothals is a full throttle farce from Theatre Paradok, with a cast that exploit every aspect of the script to deliver a show that highlights the talent involved both on stage and off.
